Orthopedics — Bipolar Hip Replacement

Latitud™ Bipolar Cup System

A factory-assembled bipolar cup combining a polished metallic outer dome with an UHMWPE inner bearing.

The Latitud™ Bipolar Cup System is a monoblock bipolar component designed for hip reconstruction while preserving the patient’s native acetabulum.

The component combines a highly polished stainless-steel outer dome with a factory-assembled ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene inner liner. The outer surface articulates directly with the preserved acetabular cartilage, while the inner bearing articulates with a compatible modular femoral head.

This dual-articulation concept provides an alternative hip reconstruction configuration for selected clinical situations in which acetabular replacement is not required.

The system

A dual-articulation monoblock concept for bipolar hip reconstruction

The bipolar component is supplied as a factory-assembled monoblock construct. Its internal bearing is manufactured from GUR 1050 ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene, while the external dome is manufactured from wrought stainless steel and finished with a highly polished articulating surface.

Two articulations are created after implantation. Internally, a compatible modular femoral head moves within the polyethylene bearing. Externally, the polished metallic dome articulates directly against the preserved native acetabulum.

The polyethylene material conforms to ASTM F648-14. The stainless-steel outer component is specified according to ASTM F139-12 and ISO 5832-1:2007 for wrought stainless steel used in surgical implants.

The system is available with different outer-shell and internal-bearing dimensions to provide compatible combinations with the selected modular femoral head.

Indication

Bipolar hip replacement

Bipolar hip replacement reconstructs the femoral side of the joint while retaining a suitable native acetabulum. The bipolar cup provides both an internal articulation with the modular femoral head and an external articulation with the acetabulum.

This type of reconstruction may be considered in selected patients with femoral neck fractures or other conditions requiring replacement of the femoral head when the acetabular joint surface remains suitable for preservation.

Patient selection, component compatibility and final implant use must follow the applicable Instructions for Use, approved indications and local regulatory requirements.
